Your Donation Could Help Save Haiti
Haiti received excessive damage from an earthquake on Tuesday afternoon that could be the largest natural disaster to ever hit the island nation. With most of the damage occurring in or around the capital city of Port-au-Prince, the earthquake with a 7.0 magnitude was followed by two aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.9 and 5.7.
Officials in Haiti are estimating that thousands of people could be dead and even more could have suffered serious injuries. With the destruction of hundreds of structures including hospitals and government buildings, Haiti is desperately seeking donations through the Red Cross and other charity organizations.
Red Cross
The Red Cross is currently accepting donations through their website, RedCross.org. Donations can also be made through text message by sending the keyword “GIVE” to “2HELP” (24357). $5 donations made through mobile devices will either appear on your monthly bill from your service provider or be debited from a prepaid balance.

Yele Haiti Foundation
Rapper and musician Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti Foundation is also raising money to fund disaster relief in the island nation. Jean, the Haitian-born former member of rap group The Fugees, began the Yele Haiti Foundation in 2004 and the organization is currently accepting donations. At the time of this writing, the organization’s site, Yele.org, is currently down from too much traffic, but donations can still be made through text message.
By sending the keyword” YELE” to 501501, you can make a $5 donation that will appear on your monthly bill like with the Red Cross.
Other Ways to Donate
Because of the extent of the damage, many other sites raising money for Haiti relief are also down due to the overload of traffic. USAid.gov is one of several sites whose jump in traffic has caused them to temporarily be unavailable.
If you do plan to donate funds to Haiti, please be sure to verify that the organization to which you choose to give your money is a legitimate charity organization.
