Are America’s Kids Too Wired?
Could 2010 finally be the future? With so many electronic devices available, it seems like we should be expecting our flying cars and robots to show up any day now. To any casual observer it might seem like every part of young people’s lives today involve some type of electronic device – and now there is research to back that up. The Kaiser Family Foundation has released a report titled “Generation M2: Media in the Lives of 8- to 18-year-olds,” which surveyed more than 2,000 students across the United States.

According to the report, an average 8-18 year-old in America devotes 7 hours and 38 minutes of every single day to media usage. That means kids today spend about 53 hours every week watching television, playing video games or using a computer. With that amount of absorption, it’s almost like entertaining themselves is a full-time job for young people in 2010. In fact, it’s actually 13 hours more than a full-time job.
The study revealed that the amount of time 8-18 year-olds dedicate to entertainment has risen dramatically over the last five years. Every year since 2004, young Americans’ average daily time spent entertaining themselves has increased by 1 hour and 17 minutes.

What’s even more shocking is that the amount of time young Americans spend consuming media is even larger if you take multitasking into consideration. When including the amount of time these tech-savvy kids spend listening to music while using a computer or cell phone, the study learned that young people are being exposed to media for as many as 10 hours and 45 minutes every day. When that amount was calculated in 2004, it was roughly two hours and 15 minutes less.
This sharp increase can largely be attributed to the cell phone. Since 2004, the mobile phone has transformed from a texting and calling device to an entire multimedia tool, giving 24-hour access to music, tv and other media.
Just imagine how much time will be dedicated to technology once the revolutionary new iPad is released. With this exclusive offer, you can get your own iPad or give one to a kid you know for absolutely free!
