Meet Google’s New Smartphone, the Nexus One
Google is making it a point to say that their new smartphone isn’t an “iPhone killer,” but the new mobile device revealed today will definitely provide some new competition for Apple. Google held an invitation-only event at its headquarters in Mountain View, California to introduce Nexus One – Google’s latest foray into the smartphone market.
The Nexus One is manufactured by HTC, a Taiwanese electronics company, and uses Android 2.1, the latest version of Google’s open-source operating system. At 11.5 millimeters thick – about the width of a No. 2 pencil – and weighing 130 grams, the device may be small, but it definitely packs a big punch. Among the Nexus One’s many features are a 3.7 inch touch screen, and a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash that can take still images and video.

The phone also has built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, an accelerometer, a compass, and a Qualcomm high-speed processor that allows multiple applications to run simultaneously. The phone comes with a mobile version of Google Earth and has 3-D capabilities that will be used more heavily in the future.
But one of the the more innovative aspects of the Nexus One is its innovative voice-enabled keyboard. This new feature allows users to speak directly into the phone instead of typing. This can be used for sending text messages, emails, surfing the web or updating Twitter and Facebook statuses.

The initial service provider for the Nexus One will be T-Mobile, but more providers will be available in the future. Service will eventually be provided by Verizon in the United States and by Vodaphone in Europe, but more providers are expected to be named in the future. The Nexus One is available now exclusively through Google’s website. Users can either purchase the phone for $180 with a T-Mobile contract or can opt to get it unlocked and open to other carriers for $530.
