Lower your Blood Sugar with Vinegar

On Thanksgiving this year, many people across the country will be concerned about what their blood sugars will be doing as they enjoy gigantic feasts of turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce. But recent studies show that there might be an unexpected way to reduce the amount your blood sugar rises after a large meal.

According to an Italian study on healthy subjects, the type of salad dressing used on a salad directly affected the amount that blood sugar was raised after the meal was completed. Two groups were studied, both of which ate a meal including a salad, white bread and less than two grams of carbohydrates. The only difference between the two meals was the type of dressing.

Out of the two groups, one was given regular salad dressing made from neutralized vinegar and the other used nothing but white vinegar for dressing. The study showed that the group who used white vinegar saw their blood sugar levels rise 30% less than the other group.

The American Diabetes Association found similar results in a study they conducted in 2004. This study found that individuals who have diabetes or insulin resistance that consumed either a placebo or vinegar-based solution before meals experienced smaller changes in their blood sugar level.

While these studies have not proven vinegar can actually lower blood sugar levels, they do suggest that adding vinegar to your meals could have a positive effect. So if you want to give your blood sugar levels a little help at Thanksgiving this year, try using some white vinegar on your salad before the big feast.
