The holidays, love em or hate em – they’ve come and gone. A new year, a new day (and a new decade) have come. For many of us, the holidays involve overeating, over-drinking, and just an excess of excess. Our pursuit of the healthy life and healthy lifestyle often takes a back seat to enjoying the holiday good times. So how to get back on track? Read on.

First, let’s rejoice that the holiday stresses are over. Holiday shopping, fighting traffic, and office parties are all outta here! If you’ve engaged in the all too common holiday practice of overeating, whether for self indulgence or simply not to be rude to your hosts, don’t be too hard on yourself. It happens to all of us. Been there. Done that. But the morning after feeling can be rough. The guilt and remorse, not to mention feeling bloated or nauseated, are unpleasant.

The cure at this point is to simply not eat again until you are really hungry. Forget the clock. If lunch comes and goes and you’re not hungry – don’t eat. Then when you do eat, opt for smaller meals. And by all means, drink plenty of fluids to help flush your system.

Stress. Is any time of the year more stressful than the holidays? Shopping, changing work and home schedules, visiting and visits by relatives we may not be on the best terms with can be a recipe for stress. Holiday stress can put you on edge, cause sleepless nights, and downright make you unpleasant to be around. So now is a good time to unwind.

Jumping back into your fitness routine can help you relieve your stress in a very positive way, such as burning calories and shedding pounds. Even a simple walk alone can work wonders for your muscles as well as your psyche. If you enjoy walking or running but it’s too cold and snowy out to make it to the gym, or you simply dislike fitness centers, then consider investing in a home treadmill. It will always be there for you to burn calories and free your mind at the same time.

One of the most stress relieving aspects of the post holidays is simply getting back to work and getting back into one’s usual routine. With the realization that things are back to normal, the stress will start to fade away.
