A person’s eyesight, kidneys and even life can be saved with glucose control. Yet when we speak of improved glucose control, what does that mean? How do we get there from here? Read on.
There are important diabetes tests such as “hemoglobin A1C”. This particular test is probably the most important diabetes tests. This test will reveal how well a person has been controlling their diabetes over the past 3 months. High blood sugar can cause changes in hemoglobin. And what is hemoglobin? It is a molecule that carries oxygen in your blood.

This new form of hemoglobin is called hemoglobin A1C. The more hemoglobin A1C a person has, the more a person’s blood sugar is not under control. According to the American Diabetes Association, a safe A1C number is 7.0. People who do not have diabetes usually have an A1C number that is less than 6.
The way to bring the A1C number down is to monitor blood sugar daily. If a person’s blood sugar levels are good but their A1C is still too high, they may need to check their postprandial glucose level. What this means is that a person should check their blood sugar one to two hours after the start of a meal. Not only does postprandial glucose level contribute a lot to your A1C, it’s been shown that high blood glucose levels following meals is a risk factor for death. Serious stuff.
