Part of This Complete Breakfast

Do you remember cereal commercials from when you were a child? No matter what type of sugar-fueled hijinks the cereals’ animated spokespersons got into in the advertisements, they would always with an announcer saying “part of this complete breakfast!”

Normally, in order to make up for the unhealthy content in the cereal, the voiceover would refer to a smorgasbord of breakfast foods that looked to be more than any child would be able to finish on his or her own. But now that you are adult and have (probably) moved on from that daily bowl of Lucky Charms every morning, there are really only three things you need to be sure you get every morning with breakfast.

Protein

Protein’s purpose is to provide the body with energy. After your body wakes from a night’s sleep, it has been without food for several hours, meaning it needs fuel. And there’s no better fuel to get you started in the morning than protein. Protein takes more time to be digested than carbohydrates, so getting in some low-fat and nutritious proteins like peanut butter, eggs and dairy can get you started in the morning without being starving by the time lunch rolls around.

Fat

If you avoid the bad fats and focus on the good ones, you’ll give your body an even better start every morning. Some chopped up almonds or walnuts sprinkled on low-fat yogurt can give you a good, healthy source of fat. You can also add some good fat into your diet by using canola or olive oil to cook your eggs instead of butter.

Carbohydrates

Like protein, complex carbohydrates are another excellent source for energy. Glucose, one type of complex carbohydrate, is the brain’s only source of energy. So in a certain sense, healthy sugars are where good ideas come from. You can also get healthy carbohydrates from whole-grain breads, pasta, rice and, yes, cereal.
