3.1 Million Baby Cribs Recalled
More than 2.1 million drop-side baby cribs by Stork Craft Manufacturing of Canada following reports of 4 infant suffocations. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said an additional 1 million cribs are being recalled in Canada. Nearly 150,00o of the cribs have the Fisher Price logo, and the recall affects cribs sold as far back as 1993.
Drop side cribs have a side that slides up and down to allow parents to lift and move babies more easily. Besides the suffocations, there have been reports of the sides detaching from the cribs. The cribs affected by the recall were manufactured between 1993 and 2009 and were sold at such retailers as Wal-Mart, Sears, Target and Costco among others.
These cribs have hardware and manufacturing problems which can cause pieces of them to break, deform or become missing over time. Reported problems include the drop side detaching, creating a dangerous space between the crib and mattress where a baby can become trapped.
Over 5 million various drop side cribs have been recalled over the past 2 years. Over a dozen infant deaths have been associated with them. The director of the Consumer Product Safety Commission says that “…I don’t think drop-sides will be a part of cribs in the future.” For its part, Toys R Us started phasing out drop side cribs and will no longer carry them next month.
