The Year in Baseball
Even though teams have packed up their lockers for the winter and the Yankees have taken home their 27th world championship, baseball fans always have the annual awards to look forward to after the Fall Classic comes to a close.
Manager of the year
American League
Mike Scioscia, manager of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim took home his second Manager of the year award. Scioscia received the award in 2002, and has been managing the Angels for ten years.
National League
The Colorado Rockies’ manager, Jim Tracy took home the manager of the year award for the National League. In addition to taking home the award, he also snagged a three-year contract extension.
Rookie of the Year
American League
A’s closer Andrew Bailey took home the AL Rookie of the Year award for, among other accomplishments, saving 26 games and finishing the season with a 1.84 ERA.
National League
The Florida Marlins’ Chris Coghlan used to be an infielder, but switched to the outfield upon being called up to the Majors. He took home the National League Rookie of the Year Award and a season batting average of .321.
Cy Young Award
American League
The Kansas City Royals’ Zack Greinke earned the top pitching award in the American League for striking out 242 batters and ending the season with a 2.16 ERA – the best in the majors.
National League
Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants won his second National League Cy Young award, and was the first repeat winner since Randy Johnson in 1999-2000.
Most Valuable Player
American League
Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins took 27 of 28 first-place votes to become only the second catcher to win the MVP award in 33 seasons.
National League
In a unanimous decision, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Albert Pujols was named the recipient of his second consecutive and third career National League MVP award.
